One such project involved replacing the old existing water mains infrastructure with new HDPE pipelines in Woodstock, Cape Town, where Mainline acted as sub-contractor to oversee the pipeline replacement.
According to Tiernan O’Rourke of Mainline, they have a long-standing relationship which spans over 7 years with Marley Pipe Systems as a manufacturer and distributor of
plastic pipe systems. This made them the logical choice as the supplier of quality HDPE pipes for use in the rehabilitation process, which involved Trenchless Technology, a technique that eliminates the need for conventional open trenches, thereby minimising impact and disruption to the surrounding area. In order to secure the project, however, Marley had to supply much more than just pipes.
The project called for around the clock assistance, which saw Marley on standby 24/7 to supply products and provide support, especially when faced with an unexpected challenge presented by one of the take-offs which sprang a leak at 7pm and had to be fixed immediately. Overall, Marley supplied over 2 000m of 110mm HDPE Class 12 pipe as well as all the compression fittings, electrofusion fittings, valves, fabricated steel fittings, hydrants, and the covers and frames needed in order to get the job done quickly and efficiently.
Trenchless Technology, also referred to as pipe cracking or pipe bursting, is an advanced method of rehabilitating pipelines and is a rapidly growing sector in the construction and civil engineering space because of the many benefits it presents in terms of cost-effectiveness, minimised environmental impact and safer procedures. This complex process involves pulling the HDPE pipe into place through the existing buried pipeline while at the same time using specialised equipment to burst the existing pipe with hydraulic pressure.
The success of the project depended heavily on a variety of factors, including the use of specialised equipment, trained professionals and all the right gear delivered on time. Tiernan was especially impressed by Marley’s ability to deliver products as and when they needed, stating that, though they are often forced to chase people in order to get a response, this was definitely not the case with Marley and for that reason, he would definitely recommend partnering with Marley as a quality manufacturer and supplier of plastic pipes and accessories.
